Boardwalk Bullies News

JANUARY 4, 2005

Havi who? The Boardwalk Bullies are riding high atop the ECHL once again with a 20-6-4 (.733) record! Their New Year's Eve victory over former Head Coach Mike Haviland's Titans dislodged Trenton from the division lead and league's pole position, then wins over the Toledo Storm (3-0 on Sunday) and Dayton Bombers (4-2 tonight) feuled their breakaway. Atlantic City has opened up a 6-point division lead over the Titans, who also maintain the league's 2nd best winning percentage. The Bullies' New Year's coup also helped current Head Coach Matt Thomas earn All-Star coaching honors for the National Conference. He will share the bench with his former mentor (Haviland) who was voted in by his peers to serve as Thomas' assistant. Meanwhile, AC netminder Jake Moreland has been selected as the Reebok Hockey ECHL Saver of the Week for December 27th - January 4th after going 3-0-0 with a shutout, .977 save percentage, and 0.67 goals against average. Moreland has started 24 consecutive games for the Boardwalk Bullies.

Derek Edwardson notched his 1st professional hat trick and added an assist to quarterback the Boardwalk Bullies to a 6-3 road romp over former Head Coach Mike Haviland and the Trenton Titans, extending Atlantic City's unbeaten-in-regulation streak to 10 games! Paul Caponigri started the scoring 5:22 into the opening period, followed less than 2 minutes later by Edwardson's 1st goal of the afternoon (a shorthander). Trenton rallied to tie the game with a pair of quick goals late in the period, but Edwardson lit the lantern with an even-strength tally 12:06 into the middle frame for a 3-2 Bullies lead. A few minutes later, Kelsey Muench cashed in on a power play for his 1st professional goal - which would stand as the game-winner! The Titans attempted to crawl back into the game with a power play goal at the 5:11 mark of the 3rd period, but Edwardson completed his hat trick 15 seconds later to demoralize the home team with a 5-3 Atlantic City edge. The icing on the cake was Brett Nowak's power play goal 14:08 through the period for a 6-3 finale. Jake Moreland racked up another win, improving to 10-2-1 with 26 saves on 29 shots. The victory gives the Bullies a 2-1 lead for the 2004/2005 Garden State Cup series against the Titans.
