The Topeka Scarecrows and Border City Bandits ceased operations on February 20, 2001. The Scarecrows returned 3 days later with a court order permitting them to return to the CHL against the league's wishes. After the 2000/2001 season ended, the CHL merged with the WPHL, retaining the CHL name. In addition to the Bandits and ScareCrows, the following teams did not join the new league: Columbus Cottonmouths (joined the ECHL), Fayetteville Force (ceased operations), Huntsville Tornado (became a junior team), and Macon Whoopee (ECHL). The ScareCrows became a USHL junior team.
