The History of the Trenton Titans

Titans History
October 26, 1995
The East Coast Hockey League made it official, awarding an expansion franchise to the city of Trenton, New Jersey. Trenton, the ECHL's 23rd franchise at the time, was slated to take to the ice for the 1997/1998 season.

June 27, 1996
The East Coast Hockey League granted the Trenton expansion franchise an extension for joining the league.

December 2, 1997
Ground-breaking ceremonies were held at the site of the Roebling Steel Works in Trenton for the Mercer County Arena, future home of Trenton's ECHL team. The 8500 seat arena is scheduled for completion in time for the start of Trenton's inaugural season in the fall of 1999.

June 30, 1998
The franchise's Governor Ronald Berman announced the appointment of Brian McKenna, former Director of Hockey for the Ottawa Senators, to oversee the business and management of the Trenton ECHL hockey franchise. McKenna became the team's General Manager.

July 6, 1998
General Manager Brian McKenna publicly announced Trenton's team name, "Titans," and unveiled the team's colors (blue, gray, and red) and official logo.

November 19, 1998
The Titans publicly introduced their team mascot, Clash.

April 15, 1999
The Titans unveiled their official home and away jerseys.

June 30, 1999
The Titans draft their first player, left wing Troy Mann from the Mississippi Sea Wolves, in the ECHL's expansion draft. Four additional players are selected in the expansion draft and three more in the dispersal draft.

July 8, 1999
Bruce Cassidy is named as the first Head Coach of the Trenton Titans.

August 13, 1999
Dan Lupo, Trenton's top pick in the Dispersal Draft, became the first player in franchise history to sign a contract with the Titans.

October 6, 1999
The Trenton Titans defeated the Johnstown Chiefs 12-3 in their first East Coast Hockey League exhibition game.

October 14, 1999
The Trenton Titans took to the ice for their first East Coast Hockey League game, dropping to the Johnstown Chiefs 3-5.

October 15, 1999
In their franchise home debut at the Sovereign Bank Arena, Bujar Amidovski and the Titans shutout the Johnstown Chiefs 3-0.

March 9, 2000
Goaltender Stephen Valiquette becomes the first former Trenton Titan to play in the NHL (with the New York Islanders). Seven days later, he earns a victory in his first NHL start.

April 2, 2000
The Trenton Titans complete their inaugural regular season campaign with a 37-29-4 record (.557) and fourth place in the Northeast Division of the Northern Conference.

April 9, 2000
The heavily favored Richmond Renegades are swept by the Trenton Titans in the Northern Conference Quarterfinals.

April 24, 2000
The Trenton Titans defeat the Hampton Roads Admirals in Game Five of the Northern Conference Semi-Finals for the series upset.

May 10, 2000
The Trenton Titans' first playoff run comes to an end with a Game Six loss to the eventual Kelly Cup Champion Peoria Rivermen in the Northern Conference Finals.

July 16, 2000
Head Coach Bruce Cassidy resigns to accept the same position with the IHL's Grand Rapids Griffins.

August 1, 2000
Troy Ward is hired to be the second Head Coach in Trenton Titans history.

October 24, 2000
Ruslan Fedotenko becomes the second former Titan to play in the NHL (with the Philadelphia Flyers). Two days later, he becomes the first former Titan to score a point in the NHL.

November 4, 2000
Ruslan Fedotenko becomes the first former Trenton Titan to score a goal in the NHL (off of Dominik Hasek of the Buffalo Sabres).

May 18, 2001
The Trenton Titans' begin their first appearance in the Kelly Cup Finals.

May 27, 2001
The Titans' second season ends with a Game Five loss to the South Carolina Stingrays in the Kelly Cup Finals.

July 30, 2001
Head Coach Troy Ward resigns to become the ECHL's Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations.

August 14, 2001
Peter Horachek is hired to be the third Head Coach in Trenton Titans history.

January 22, 2002
Trenton's Sovereign Bank Arena hosts the 2002 ECHL All-Star Game.

March 11, 2002
Matt Henderson becomes the first former Titan to play in the NHL before (4/14/99 debut with Nashville Predators) and after (Chicago Blackhawks) playing in Trenton.

April 16, 2002
The Trenton Titans' third season comes to an end with a Game Three loss to the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies in the Northeast Division Finals.

May 22, 2002
Head Coach Peter Horachek resigns to accept the same position with the AHL's Milwaukee Admirals.

June 25, 2002
Former Trenton Titans Head Coach Bruce Cassidy is named as the new Head Coach of the NHL's Washington Capitals.

July 9, 2002
Bill Armstrong is hired to be the fourth Head Coach in Trenton Titans history.

October 7, 2002
Rich Lisk replaces Brian McKenna as General Manager of the Trenton Titans. McKenna becomes the President/CEO of the East Coast Hockey League.

October 11, 2002
Bruce Cassidy becomes the first former Titans Head Coach to coach in the NHL, guiding the Washington Capitals to a 5-4 victory over the Nashville Predators.

June 3, 2004
Former Assistant Coach Mike Haviland returns to Trenton as the fifth Head Coach in Titans history.

June 1, 2005
