Without ever experiencing the thrill of victory, the Indoor Professional Football League's Trenton Lightning have ceased operations. Financial problems brought about the sudden death of Trenton's youngest sports franchise. The demise of the Lightning leaves the IPFL with just 4 teams to finish the 2001 season. The relatively strong fan support for the woeful 0-6 Lightning should give incentive for another indoor football franchise at Sovereign Bank Arena in the near future, probably in the af2 - the Arena Football League's minor league.

The third time is NOT the charm for the Trenton Lightning as they suffered a demoralizing 41-24 home loss against the Tennessee ThunderCats. The 'Cats have accounted for half of the damage in Trenton's 0-6 season record.

MAY 12, 2001

The Lightning is still waiting to strike! Trenton dropped to 0-5 on their inaugural season with a 39-26 loss to the Tennessee ThunderCats. The Lightning rallied from a 21-point hole to pull within 7 (at 33-26), but couldn't overtake the undefeated ThunderCats.

The losing margin is getting smaller every week, but a loss is still a loss. The St. Louis Renegades defeated the Trenton Lightning 14-13 to drop the home team to 0-4 on their inaugural season.

The Lightning made it interesting, but the Omaha Beef spoiled their home debut 51-41. A crowd of about 5000 fans turned out at Sovereign Bank Arena to welcome Trenton's newest professional sports franchise. Despite the loss, Lightning quarterback Bill Ward delivered his best performance of the young season, completing 16 of 22 pass attempts for 162 yards and 4 touchdowns, with only 1 interception.

The Boise Stallions ran past the Trenton Lightning 29-12 in Week 2 of IPFL action. The 0-2 Lighting hope to reverse their fortune next Saturday when they host the Omaha Beef at their Sovereign Bank Arena debut.

Contrary to classical thinking, Thunder is quicker than Lightning - at least when it comes to arena football. The Tennessee ThunderCats defeated the visiting Trenton Lightning 52-25 in a battle of IPFL expansion teams. Tennessee scored a touchdown on their first play from the line of scrimmage, but a pair of 51-yard field goals from TCNJ alum Dave Johnston tied the game at 6-6 for Trenton. After the ThunderCats opened up a 14-6 lead, Lightning quarterback Bill Ward teamed up with receiver Tom Patten for their franchise's first touchdown. Trenton remained close with a 23-18 score at halftime, but the ThunderCats never let them back into the game, cruising to a 52-25 final.

Former St. Joseph Regional High School (Montvale, NJ) and Georgetown University star Billy Ward will be the starting quarterback tomorrow night as the Trenton Lightning make their Indoor Professional Football League debut in Knoxville against the Tennessee ThunderCats.

The Trenton Lightning also unveiled their mascot: Zap (a lightning bolt hat-wearing dog with an electrical cord for a tail).
