Through 2/15 - With only seven weeks remaining in the 11th ECHL Season, the ECHL playoff race is heating up:
NORTHERN CONFERENCE / NORTHEAST DIVISION: Despite a 7-7-2 performance since the All-Star break, the Roanoke Express are poised to repeat as Northeast Division champions. Roanoke has allowed only 2.81 goals per game behind goaltenders Daniel Berthiaume (13-9-2 2.53 .914) and Dave Gagnon (15-5-3 2.79 .912). The Richmond Renegades have been red hot since the break (12-4-1), rising into second place by points (3rd by percentage). Goalie Maxime Gingras (20-12-3 2.34 .921) has played a major role in their recent success. Meanwhile, the Hampton Roads Admirals went 4-6-2 to slip to third place by points (2nd by percentage). They will be gearing up for a run at a second consecutive Riley Cup Championship to compliment their two Kelly Cups. In fourth place, skating on thin ice with the Conference's eighth and final playoff seed are the Chesapeake Icebreakers after a 7-8-2 month. The 'Breakers will be searching for their first playoff victory if they can hang onto the berth. Hopes have faded once again for the Johnstown Chiefs after they posted a 6-8-2 record since the break. Last place in the division and a fourth consecutive year without a postseason bid are nearly clinched.
NORTHERN CONFERENCE / NORTHWEST DIVISION: Even after a 6-5-1 post-break performance, the Toledo Storm remain at the top of the Northwest Division and the Northern Conference. Center Anthony Terzo (25G, 25A in 50 games) and right wing Andrew Williamson (26G, 10A in 36 games) have led the Toledo offense. Seeking to return to the playoffs after a one year absence, the Columbus Chill have risen to second place by percentage due to a 11-4-2 run. A 22-5-1 home record (compared to 5-13-2 on the road) has inflated their standings a bit. The Peoria Rivermen are 8-4-3 since the All-Star Game and retain the number three spot in division by percentage. A 11-4-1 month has increased the likelihood that the Dayton Bombers will continue their streak of playoff invites. On the outside looking in after a 8-7-1 record since the break, the Huntington Blizzard hold fifth place in the division. Despite weak special teams (23rd PP, 24th PK), they remain in close striking distance of a playoff bid should Chesapeake falter. Falling to last place in the Northwest Division after going 4-8-2 for the month, the Wheeling Nailers are at risk of missing the playoffs for the first time since their Winston-Salem days.
SOUTHERN CONFERENCE / SOUTHEAST DIVISION: The Pee Dee Pride continue their impressive sophomore season in South Carolina with a 10-3-1 record since the break. Left wing Allan Sirois (27G, 34A in 49 games) and center Dany Bousquet (21G, 36A in 57 games) have fueled the offense that boasts a 4.04 goals per game production. The Florida Everblades continue their roller coaster ride, ascending to second place (by percentage) due to a torrid 12-2-1 run. A stingy defense that allows only 2.57 goals per game has made Florida's inaugural season a very successful one. The South Carolina Stingrays won't be capturing another division title, but will be heading into the postseason. They remain in third place by both points and percentage following an 8-4-2 performance. In second place by points but fourth by percentage, the Augusta Lynx appear playoff bound after a two year hiatus while in Raleigh. They have gone 8-4-2 since the All-Star Game. Another franchise that seems poised to return to playoff action after 2 seasons is the Jacksonville Lizard Kings. The Kings are in fifth place by percentage after going 10-7 over the past month. Meanwhile, a 4-6-3 post-break record has the Greenville Grrrowl on the verge of losing their inaugural season playoff bid. As the lowest team on the playoff ladder, the slightest slip could prove fatal. A 7-6-2 mark since the playoff break will not suffice if the seventh place Charlotte Checkers wish to avoid their franchise's first playoff boycott. Falling like a rock to last place with a 4-10 record since the break, the Miami Matadors have lost their foothold on a playoff spot. A sluggish offense (2.75 goals per game) is unlikely to lead a late season charge for the former RiverFrogs.
SOUTHERN CONFERENCE / SOUTHWEST DIVISION: The Louisiana IceGators continue to dominate the league with a 10-2-1 record since the break. The biggest question is whether the Ragin' Cajuns can hold onto a record high ECHL win percentage while scoring 4.52 goals per game and yielding only 2.83 goals. A 9-7-1 month has cemented the playoff aspirations of the Mississippi Sea Wolves. In a dead-heat for the distant third place in the Southwest Division, the Birmingham Bulls (6-7-1) and New Orleans Brass (4-10-2) each had lackluster months. Both will retain their playoff spots barring a total breakdown. The Baton Rouge Kingfish continue to bask in mediocracy after a 7-6-2 month that gives them an even season record (20-20-7). A .500 win percentage will probably suffice to send them to the playoffs for the first time since 1993 (as the Erie Panthers). The Tallahassee Tiger Sharks did not help their efforts to return to post-season play with a 5-8 month. A last minute Shark attack is still quite possible. The Mobile Mysticks are practically eliminated after a 6-7-2 month that leaves them in seventh place in the Southwest. A 8-6-3 performance since the All-Star break may have returned a shread of respectability to the Pensacola Ice Pilots, but the playoffs are a distant fantasy for the league's weakest link. That doesn't seem to deter the die hard fans - the Pilots are 6th in the league for attendance with over 6000 per game.
